Mini has unveiled the new 2009 Mini Sports Coupe Concept. The new Mini abandons the square boxy design of the current version for a new sleeker more refined sporty look. The “pocket Porsche” of sorts measures 146.1 inches long and 66.1 inches wide. The new bubble top/green house, is 53.3 inches high or 1.4″ lower than the current version. Another sporty quality is the slight weight reduction due to the removal of the rear seats, or 175-200 lbs lighter than the current version. Under the hood remains the same 211 hp 1.6 inline turbo engine found in the current Mini Cooper S, so this car is sure to please enthusiasts.

There is no word yet on whether this car is destined for production, but Mini does hint at this by saying “everything you see is doable for production” . Another hint is the lack of over the top interior often seen in concept only cars as this concept employs the same interior found in the current Mini. For the time being, the car is scheduled to show at the upcoming 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. If indeed Mini chooses to produce this car in a form resembling the concept, they will surely have another hit on their hands!

One thing is for sure, whenever the idiot pundits and analysts say something is going to happen you can be sure that the opposite will occur. Such is the case with a recent article on CNN claiming that oil not going to triple digits any time soon.

The reasons? Well, as usual a bunch of hot air. Everything from economic worries and remaining fears recession fears to stocks not going up much more from here. Well, if you remember a couple years back, the same pundits were saying that oil was never going below $100 again. Less than 6 months later, it was less than $50 with gas prices resembling the 90s.

GM has announced that they are recalling over 1300 workers to build an additional 60,000 cars. The company said this is a direct response to the government’s successful Cash for Clunkers programs. The additional capacity is scheduled to take place during late 3rd and 4th quarters in order to meed increased demand on the company’s more fuel efficient models. In addition to the 1300 worker call back, the extra demand will mean 10,000 extra hours for existing workers.

“The uptick is an encouraging sign that vehicle sales are turning around, and we will ramp up quickly to meet that demand,” said Tim Lee, GM group vice president for global manufacturing and labor, in a statement. Mark LaNeve, GM vice president of U.S. sales also added that he expects more production increases to be announced in coming weeks and that the increased production could continue into the early 2010. While all this sounds like good news, Mr. LaNeve also added that strong sales to rental car companies and other so-called fleet customers last August will make it difficult for GM to post a year-over year gain in sales.

Despite some early criticism, this could be just another sign that the C.A.R.S program has been an unequivocal success. Who ever knew that a government program could actually work?
